Research on international job seekers and students
Our research and survey report focuses on German companies.
The research report we’ve compiled is divided into three parts. The first section details the challenges faced by job seekers, those looking for suitable training positions, or an FSJ/BFD pair position in Germany.
The second section provides an in-depth analysis of the various challenges and hurdles encountered while in Germany.
The third section outlines solutions and strategies to simplify the international recruitment process by overcoming these obstacles and issues.
Challenges In India & South east Asia
German Business Solution’s internal report reveals that numerous recruitment agencies in South Asian countries, including India, are operating illegally, making false promises and overcharging for their services. The research suggests that as many as 99% of these agencies may be engaging in illegal activities.
The report also highlights the difficulties candidates face in their home countries when trying to find a reputable agency and a credible German school. Many students give up on their aspirations to pursue careers in Germany due to misleading advice from agents and unfulfilled promises.
Furthermore, these individuals often have to abandon their plans to learn German and instead seek employment in countries like the GCC, Singapore, the Maldives, or Malta, where 92% of candidates find Arabic to be a more accessible language than German.
During our investigation, it was revealed that the average pass rate at German language schools is a mere 20%, significantly lower than the expected 80% to 90%. Additionally, students were not aware that their teachers were unfit to teach German.
In many schools, German is taught by uncertified teachers who have only recently passed their B2 exam and lack prior teaching experience or qualifications.
Our findings indicate that the core problem lies with the German teachers, not the language; the majority are ineffective educators who cannot be properly assessed by the students themselves.
Our survey indicates that a scant 1% of German language schools offer a quality education, while the rest fail to support the students’ dreams and ambitions.
However, numerous recruitment agencies deceive candidates by claiming extensive experience in recruitment while hiding that this expertise is limited to English-speaking and Gulf corporation countries.
Recently, the UK, Canada, and other English-speaking regions have lost their appeal to international job seekers due to high living costs, increasing poverty, and changing immigration policies; hence, they are no longer preferred destinations.
Germany, offering free education, generous salaries, and welcoming immigration policies, has attracted agents who previously focused on English-speaking countries to shift their operations to European markets like Germany.
Recruitment agencies often mislead candidates by presenting themselves as experienced when they possess minimal or no understanding of the German job market and language. Without comprehensive German language skills, they cannot offer adequate service to their clients.
Many candidates squander both time and money by using the services of such agencies and by learning German from instructors with insufficient language proficiency.
Challenges in Germany
Whether you come to Germany with a blue visa, an opportunity card, a direct job, to study, complete an apprenticeship, do an FSP, BFD, or work as an au pair, don’t assume it’s the end of your challenges. In fact, the real challenge begins upon arrival. Many people come to Germany with a job seeker visa or an opportunity card.
Arriving in a foreign country presents you with unfamiliar laws, languages, and systems. Unfortunately, if you face any issues in Germany, an Indian recruitment agency might not take responsibility or offer assistance.
Many students, employees, and job seekers come to Germany and encounter difficult situations. Often, they feel unable to share their struggles with their parents to avoid worrying them, and without a support system in Germany, they may suffer in solitude. This isolation can lead to severe depression.
These problems often stem from inadequate preparation, misinformation, poor advice from agents, incorrect information from YouTube, and the individual’s overconfidence in managing everything alone.
Other challenges include finding accommodation, navigating German bureaucracy, signing contracts, and managing visa changes or extensions, which can be daunting tasks.
There are numerous instances where individuals, whether employed, participating in Au pair or FSJ/BFD programs, are terminated from their positions. In such situations, these applicants face severe hardships: without income, funds, or employment, they are left nearly helpless in a foreign nation.
The inability of agents in one’s home country to provide assistance, coupled with the uncertainty of where to seek help in Germany, exacerbates the situation. Concurrently, individuals must handle their monthly living expenses, such as food and housing.
Specifically addressing Au pairs, FSJ, and BFD participants, it is common for Au pairs, often young women, to arrive in Germany with limited German language skills. Unfortunately, they frequently encounter mental, physical, and sexual harassment upon starting positions with unsuitable families.
Nurses in Germany must pass the Anerkennung exams to retain their jobs and income. Failure to pass can result in job loss and the forfeiture of any employer-provided support. Imagine the predicament one would face in such a situation.
Individuals who come to Germany on a job seeker visa have a limited time to find appropriate employment while covering their living expenses. If they do not secure a job within this timeframe, they are required to leave the country.
Many applicants are not aware that staff at authorities like foreign offices, finance offices, or banks may not speak English, and all documentation is in German. Signing any document without fully understanding its contents can lead to serious legal issues and substantial penalties.
